Hoddles Creek Estate Road Block Chardonnay 2018

What a joy to drink a top class Chardonnay. This is classy, complex and elegant. There's heaps of attractive smokiness, matchstick, and pear/lime cordial/ crunchy peach aromas. Mouthfilling Chardonnay, with good depth, roundness and length, but still restrained fruit.  As a Yarra Valley wine, it has some of the giving, soft fleshiness of fruit from the region, but it is more restrained than many.  More pear-melon-lemon in flavour. Tight, but never mean.  For complexity there's also a good dose of creamy, buttery depth and the delicate touch of French oak.  Deep, rich and round fruit is essential to carry this much complexity and still end up with an elegant wine.  The finish is again smokey with sweet buttered lemon toast. And sweet pear and peach.  And butterscotch. And matchstick. And ....
